[Poll] 1. Why would parents choose to devote so much effort to sending their children to school?

I think that parents think it is important as it is a way for their children to get a better life than the one that they have had. The parents had no access to education and therefore had very little opportunities to do other than manual, low-paid work. With education, their children will have more opportunities.
